July 2003: Coming From Medscape Pulmonary Medicine This Month
Although the epidemic has started to subside, severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) continues to make headlines in the news and events we have been covering. We recently held a Web conference entitled SARS: Here Today, Here Tomorrow (Live Web Conference). Speakers included Larry Anderson, MD, Chief of the Respiratory and Enteric Viruses Branch at the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention; and Georges Benjamin, MD, FACP, Executive Director of the American Public Health Association. View the archived presentation and get CME.

After attending Dr. John J. Marini's debate entitled, "Randomized Trials Determine Best Practice in the ICU: Pro-Con Debate," at the 23rd International Symposium on Intensive Care and Emergency Medicine in Brussels, Belgium in March 2003, Dr. Antonios Liolios wrote an article as part of the conference coverage for Medscape Critical Care. Dr. Liolios had a few more questions to ask about the topic, so he spoke again to Dr. Marini. Read the Expert Column Interview entitled, "Randomized, Controlled Trials in Critical Care: An Expert Interview With John J. Marini, MD."

News from the American Thoracic Society's 99th International Conference was posted on the site as it came in from the meeting. Take a look that the news. The CME program should be posted shortly. Stay tuned. Don't forget to read the Conference Coverage from the 23rd International Symposium on Intensive Care and Emergency Medicine (ISICEM) in Brussels, Belgium. Also, the Conference Coverage from the Society of Critical Care Medicine's 32nd Critical Care Congress in San Antonio, Texas is still available for those who have not yet read it.

One of the new features that I told you about previously on Medscape Pulmonary Medicine is News CME. The current CME news item is entitled, "Salbutamol, Ipratropium Bromide Equally Effective in COPD." Get the CME credit by reading the news and completing the short posttest.

If you are looking for more CME programs, remember to take a look at the Clinical Update on "Therapeutic Potential of PDE4 Inhibitors in Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease." It will provide some of the latest studies and thinking on this aspect of treatment for COPD. We have a Clinical Update on "Streptococcus pneumoniae Infections: Microbiology, Epidemiology, Treatment, and Prevention." We have also recertified and posted an article on "Effect of a Catabolic State With Involuntary Weight Loss on Acute and Chronic Respiratory Disease." Read them now and get the CME.

We have just posted a number of articles from our publishing partners. From the journal Seminars in Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine, we have an article entitled, "Genetics of Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome: Challenges, Approaches, Surfactant Proteins as Candidate Genes." and from Current Opinion in Allergy and Clinical Immunology we have posted an article entitled, "The Development of Asthma in Patients with Allergic Rhinitis." From Emerging Infectious Diseases comes an article on "Control Measures for Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) in Taiwan."

Looking ahead, you should be aware of the 17th Asia-Pacific Congress on Diseases of the Chest (APCDC), which is scheduled to take place in Istanbul, Turkey, August 29-September 2, 2003. For other upcoming conference events, be sure to check out our Conference Calendar listing in the Conference Center section of the Medscape Pulmonary Medicine site.

The Pulmonary Medicine Journal Scan continues to provide a monthly review of interesting and topical journal articles from specialty and general interest journals. To get a quick look at what has been published recently in the field, take a look at the latest Pulmonary Medicine Journal Scan. The current Journal Scan provides reviews of articles on composite index of idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, bacterial load and FEV1 decline in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, BiPAP use in acute asthma attacks, and evaluation of lung volume reduction surgery in 200 consecutive patients.

The Medscape Pulmonary Medicine eJournal has been launched as part of Medscape General Medicine (MedGenMed), edited by George D. Lundberg, MD, Editor in Chief. Articles cover all aspects of pulmonary medicine and get posted faster than in most traditional journals. If you are a clinician, remember to send in your pulmonary-related case studies to the same email address. The cases will be presented in an interactive format that links into the discussion section of the site as well, allowing users to comment on the cases.
