Definition: Oximetry

Oximetry is a measurement of oxygen content in the blood.

Oximetry is a noninvasive procedure in which the oxygen saturation level (percent of oxygen in the blood), is determined by placing a probe on a patients finger, toe, or earlobe.

This is done most commonly with a probe place on a fingertip, but can also be measured on an earlobe, forehead, or even on the nose.

Normal oxygen saturation levels are between 95% and 100%.

An inadequate level of oxygen in the blood is termed hypoxemia.  Hypoxemia in turn can lead to hypoxia, a serious condition in which the tissues and organs of the body are deprived of adequate oxygen.
