How to Repair a Washing Machine That Moves Across a Room

    • 1). Unplug the washing machine or turn off the power at the breaker box, to protect yourself from electric shock.

    • 2). Look inside the washer's tub, and see if the clothes have shifted to one side of the tub. If there are more clothes on one side, move part of them to the other side until the weight is distributed evenly. Turn the power to the washing machine back on, and run the washer to see if the clothes machine stays balanced.

    • 3). Place the level on the washing machine, checking the machine from side to side as well as from back to front. If the bubble rests to either side of the level's slash marks, that side is higher than the other side.

    • 4). Tip the washing machine and slide the wood block under the edge, lining it up with the edge of the washer. This will hold the washer up while you make adjustments. Wiggle the washing machine gently to make sure it is steady before you put your hand underneath.

    • 5). Grasp the foot that is too high with the pliers, and turn clockwise to lower the foot. If the foot is too low, turn counterclockwise with the pliers.

    • 6). Check with the level to make sure the foot is adjusted to the right height. Look for the level's bubble to be centered between the two slash marks on the level. Continue adjusting the feet until the washer is level.
