How to Add an Outlet to a Light Switch

104 13
    • 1). Locate the circuit breaker for the light switch, in the main service panel, and turn it off.

    • 2). Remove the screws holding the cover plate on the wall switch and the screws holding the wall switch in its electrical box. Set the screws and cover aside. Pull the switch out of the box and disconnect the switch from the wiring with the screwdriver.

    • 3). Create a pigtail by cutting a 6-inch piece of cable off the roll. Strip away all the outer sheathing completely. Separate the three wires (black, white and bare) and strip off 1-inch of insulation off the black wire, discard the white wire.

    • 4). Connect one end of the black pigtail wire to the brass screw on the switch, and one end of the bare pigtail wire to the green screw. Tighten the screws down on the wire.

    • 5). Locate the area where the outlet will be installed. Use the stud finder to ensure there are no wall studs where the hole will be cut. Measure up from the floor 18 inches and mark the wall. Cut a hole in the wall just large enough for the electrical outlet box to fit inside.

    • 6). Punch out a knockout hole in the electrical outlet box, and slide the box into the hole in the wall. Tighten the box down into position using the screwdriver and the included screws.

    • 7). Run the romex cable from the electrical outlet box, through the walls and ceiling and out the wall switch box. Leave 6 inches of the cable hanging out each box. (For help on running electrical cable through the walls, see "Resources.")

    • 8). Strip 4 inches of outer sheathing one end of the cable. Spread apart the three inside wires, and strip 1 inch of insulation off the black and white wires that are inside the cable. Repeat this step to the other end of the cable.

    • 9). Connect the wiring from the outlet box to the outlet. Connect the bare wire to the green screw, the white wire to the silver screw and the black wire to the brass screw. Tighten the screws down. Insert a screw into each hole in the outlet and attach the outlet to the box and tighten down the screws. Attach the cover plate and tighten its screw down.

Twist together the black wire from the light to the black wire from the outlet and to the black pigtail wire on the switch. Twist the white wires together, and twist the bare wires together. Twist on a wire nut on the end of each twisted connection. Attach the red wire from the light to the silver screw on the switch and tighten it down.

Push the wiring back into the box and attach the switch and cover plate back in place using the screws to tighten them down.

    • 12

Turn the circuit breaker back on and test the outlet and light for operation.
