Education

• Although agencies may vary with regard to what educational level is required for a probation officer position, most agencies require you to have a bachelor's degree. Often, the requirement does not specify in what major; however, common majors for a career as a probation officer include criminal justice or corrections as well as psychology or social work. Foreign language skills are also sought after in the criminal justice system.
  
  

Experience

• Often, experience is not required to obtain a position as a probation officer; however, if you are able to gain experience in the criminal justice field prior to applying you stand a better chance. While you are pursuing your bachelor's degree, you may wish to apply for support positions, such as secretarial and mail clerk, in the administration in the criminal justice or court system. In addition, you may be able to volunteer or do an internship within the system while still in undergraduate school.
  
  

Background

• Of equal importance to your educational background is your personal background. Most agencies will put you through an extensive background check including a fingerprint check with the FBI. A consumer credit report and alcohol testing may also be requested. Reasons for disqualification vary by agency; however, in most cases, a felony conviction or a misdemeanor conviction involving a sex offense, domestic violence or controlled substance .are often reasons for disqualification.
  
  

Training

• Once you have been selected and passed background investigations and testing, you will likely be required to complete a comprehensive training program. At the federal level, and in some state agencies, probation officers are considered law enforcement officers and must complete law enforcement officer training as well as training specific to the duties of a probation officer.
