How to Unlock Your Wii Console

The Nintendo Wii console for its size is a remarkably complex and powerful gaming console. However compared to similar gaming systems on the market, for example the PS3 and XBox 360, it falls short in that you are unable to play DVD's, plus the games region coded. The good news is that the Wii can be easily unlocked.

Without unlocking your Wii console you are missing out on its full potential. So to fully utilize the Wii console and play imported or downloaded games, watch DVD's, and free up its potential, you need to unlock it.

There are two ways to unlock the Wii, either using hardware and installing a mod chip, or software that rewrites the machines operating system or firmware.

Unlocking using a mod chip is all well and good if you know what you are doing, but even then modding the Wii in this way will void the warranty and block further firmware updates from nintendo. It could even result in your console being blocked from accessing some online games. If you don't know what you are doing however adding mod chips can result in a broken console, and unusable Wii. For these reasons I would not recommend this method

The other method involves using a software patch to rewrite or modify the systems firmware or operating system. There are many available, and I would recommend researching any you are interested in online to find the one you feel will be best for you. This patch is referred to as a homebrew installer.

Whilst not being illegal the manufacturers don't like them, and sometimes will block the latest ones during a system update. You have two choices as far as I can see. One is to buy a homebrew installer mod which works with the current system and then do not install any further manufacturer updates, or buy a homebrew installer which comes with future updates to the installer included. As being a resourceful bunch, the people that make the homebrew installer will crack any system upgrades and provide a new version of the patch as needed.

The advantages of a firmware patch is that they are easy to install and easy to remove if they are found to be not suitable, most will let your Wii play DVD's, imported games, third party homebrew games and also emulate other games systems. Allowing you to play games written for other systems on your Wii.

A firmware patch will not void our Wii's warranty, nor will it stop you from updating the system on the Nintendo wii channel as updates become available.

All in all a suitable firmware patch can fully unlock your Wii, and vastly expand its entertainment possibility. This is the only method I would recommend to unlock your Nintendo Wii console.

After much research and investigation I have found the best firmware mod or
