Retirement Life

101 9
There are all kinds of options for those who retire from the jobs at which they have worked all their lives in order to be able to support themselves and their families. Some people decide to sell their old houses and move into the country, where they can enjoy life and receive visits from their relatives and friends. Others go for the assisted living option, whereby they continue to live in their own private residences but receive help from professionals with performing those functions that form part of the activities of daily living, such as getting out of bed, getting washed, eating and drinking and so on. Still others may be moved into nursing homes, at either their own request or that of their families. This article will explore the options, with a special emphasis on senior living in Florida.

Because Florida is such a big state (it is the second largest state east of the Mississippi except for Georgia), and has such a large population (currently the fourth largest in the nation, after California, Texas and New York), one would be at great risk to make a general statement of any kind. It would be reasonable to say, however, that because of the state's exceptionally warm and sunny climate, with little or no snow even in winter, senior living in Florida is among the most pleasant in the country, and the state ranks among those areas that are especially popular as places for retirement, Cape Cod being another. It certainly offers some of the most famous attractions for tourists as well as for those who are living there year round, and in some cities, such as St. Petersburg, the population is largely composed of elderly or retired people.

The centers for senior living in Florida offer their residences with opportunities for visiting the beaches, marshes and forests that are scattered throughout the state, as well as such world-famous attractions as Disney World, Universal Studios, Gatorland and Seaworld Orlando Resort. One place, aptly named Sunrise Senior Living, has nurturing residences in such major popular centers as Boca Raton, Tampa and Jacksonville and have instilled in their residents a sense of community that enables them to feel independent even as they are undergoing assisted living. Even when the people are not being taken on tours, there are plenty of things to do back at the homes, where they can take part in such activities as backgammon, singalong socials, art classes, bingo, checkers, beach volleyball, penny poker, dominoes, yahtzee, PO-KE-NO (a game that combines bingo and poker), scrabble, bowling, golf and hand bells, besides socializing. They also have the opportunities to help to cook meals based on a variety of recipes created with nutrition in mind, and to have a rich spiritual experience.
