- 1). Prune back the tips of the bush that lay against a wall or over a walkway using pruning shears to reduce the size of the plant. Cut straight across the juniper so the edge is a uniform shape.
- 2). Trace branches with yellow or brown foliage back to where the foliage is green, and cut the dead portion off with hand pruners.
- 3). Hold the branches back with one hand and prune off dead branches at the bottom of the shrub as close to the ground as possible using the hand pruners.
- 4). Lift the upper branches into a vertical position and locate one-third of the longest ones. Prune these longer branches back to the same length as the shorter branches so they blend in to the rest of the shrub. This prevents them from shading out the underlying branches and improves the shape of the juniper.
- 5). Gather up all of the pruned juniper branches and discard them.
