• SATCOM is a military term that is short for "satellite communications" and is used to signify the technologies and protocols involved or someone who has a job that deals with such technology. For example, a Marine may be a SATCOM operator or SATCOM technician. Satellite communications are used in the high capacity connections with military and civilian communication protocols and is the backbone of many Marine Corps functions.
  
  

Importance of Satellite Technology

• Satellites and SATCOM play a vital role in the global operations of the marines. The Marine Corps have a "ship to shore" guarantee of six hours. This means that they are able to mobilize a response and dispatch Marines anywhere in the world withing six hours. SATCOM technology helps make this level of efficiency possible as it allows the Marine Corps to communicate with soldiers and allies dispatched around the globe and coordinate missions with high precision.
  
  

Enlisted Responsibilities

• The Marine SATCOM technician works as part of a team and has responsibilities that vary based on where the Marine is stationed. Part of the role involves ensuring that SATCOM equipment is always performing optimally. This requires routine maintenance, running diagnostics and general upkeep. In the event that there is a malfunction with satellite technology, the Marine technician is the expert on getting the communication systems back up and running. This is a time-sensitive job as a properly running SATCOM system can save lives. In addition, enlisted Marine satellite technicians must complete the Marine Corps 12-week training program, which includes leadership training, weapons training and basic martial arts.
  
  

Job Requirements

• The Marine satellite technician is a highly trained and skilled member of the Corps. To qualify for the job, Marines must have a minimum of an associate's degree in engineering or equivalent training in electrical engineering and communications concepts. The more experience you have as a SATCOM professional, the greater your potential to earn higher salaries. Satellite technicians must also be able to react accurately to rapidly changing and vital scenarios and have an ethic of continual education because satellite technologies advance routinely.
