Zumba your way into fitness

101 3
Zumba is currently one of the hottest exercise crazes and has hit the world by storm, leading gyms to re schedule their fitness classes to incorporate it, and it has even topped the game charts with the Wii Zumba fit game hitting the number 1 spot in terms of sales.  Zumba Fitness has become the first fitness game to have hit the top of the charts since Wii Fit Plus was released back in 2009.  So now you know it's popular, do you actually know what it is and how it could benefit you?

Zumba is a new Latin-inspired fitness program. This fun aerobics style of exercise, carried out to upbeat Latin music, results in an intense cardiovascular workout. Zumba is described as an "exhilarating, effective, easy-to-follow, Latin-inspired, calorie-burning dance fitness party that's moving millions of people toward joy and health" (according to Zumba fitness).

It is also perfect for singles, as most Latin dance involves a partner but Zumba can be done solo or in a class with friends.  Zumba is a fun alternative to the normal drudgery of working out and those who try it tend to become firm fans and highly recommend it. All of us want to keep fit so instead of running in place for an hour on a stationary treadmill, watching the clock slowly tick past, anticipating the moment you can jump off triumphantly and stagger to the water fountain, you could be shaking it up in an aerobics inspired dance workout with your friends.  In Zumba classes you watch the clock, not to see how much longer you have to endure, but to see when the party has to end.  If you're the first one on the dance floor on nights out, and can forget yourself while dancing to your favourite tunes then Zumba is for you.

As well as the fun social side of Zumba, the fitness benefits cannot be underestimated.  Zumba works out and tones your entire body instead of just focusing on a specific muscle group.    Therefore it's a great class for those who want to improve their fitness and body tone but aren't traditional gym fans.  If you find your mind wandering through yoga classes and you feel like you're going to have a heart attack during spinning then why not try Zumba and see what all the current fuss is about.

For those nervous about attending a Zumba class for the first time, why not ease yourself into it with Zumba workout DVDs or games which can be found for the Nintendo, playstation or Wii.  There are numerous Zumba DVDs that come in a range of different fitness levels.  The workouts are much like the class-based workouts, burning around 1000 calories an hour, similar results are found with the games so there is no reason why you can't learn to Zumba from the comfort of your own home.  Perhaps once you've picked up the basic steps and got the hang of it you'll venture into a class and start enjoying the interaction of exercising while having a blast.
