How to Prep Concrete for Dye

104 5
    • 1). Allow your concrete to properly cure for 28 days before attempting to apply a dye. Avoid the use of liquid curing agents on concrete---this can impede the ability of the dye to properly penetrate the concrete. Do not apply sealers or other membrane coatings to the concrete surface before dyeing.

    • 2). Sweep and remove all surface dust from the concrete with a broom or vacuum brush.

    • 3). Remove all oils, waxes, grease or dirt from the concrete by scrubbing the surface with a mild detergent and hard-bristled scrub brush. Rinse the area well and allow it to dry thoroughly

    • 4). Test the area for penetrability by pouring a small amount of water on the concrete surface. Water that beads indicates you will need to sand or grind the concrete before applying a dye to improve the porousness of the surface.

    • 5). Purchase a concrete cleaner and rent a buffing machine with a black pad to grind away on non-porous concrete to remove the surface seal and improve penetration. Use the cleaner according to the manufacturer's directions and wear proper eye protection when buffing the cement. Move slowly over the area with the buffer, beginning at one end of the concrete surface and working toward the other.

    • 6). Clean concrete residue left behind from the buffer by vacuuming or sweeping. Follow up with another mild detergent and water cleanse of the area, making sure not to leave any soaps or detergents behind after cleaning. Allow the concrete to dry for 24 hours before attempting to dye.
