      As a widely grown flower in home landscapes, petunias have four classifications. Grandiflora produce large single or ruffled blossoms. Multifloral are compact mounds with smaller blooms. Millifloral are the smallest compact petunias with tiny blooms. Groundcover or trailing petunias cascade in baskets and spread across soil. Any petunia planted in full sun rewards with an abundance of blooms from spring through fall.

      Wave petunias are a groundcover variety developed by growers. Reaching a height of 6 inches, they can spread up to 48 inches, making them ideal for hanging baskets. Wave Blue is a cultivar exhibiting deep purple blossoms from spring to late summer. Grown as an annual, Wave Blue requires full sun for optimal blooming. This cascading petunia also requires regular watering and fertilizer each week. In garden beds or planters, space Wave Blue seedlings 12 to 24 inches apart to provide adequate room to grow. Water early in the day to avoid damp foliage at night.

    Supertunia Mini Blue Veined

    • Supertunia Mini Blue Veined is a hybrid groundcover petunia, which excels in hanging baskets by cascading over the edge in a burst of color. This hardy trailing petunia is low maintenance, disease resistant and does not require deadheading. It is heat and drought tolerant and prefers full sun. Hummingbirds and butterflies are attracted to the fragrant blooms in shades of lavender. Mini Blue Veined is compact, only reaching a height of 8 inches. Its trailing stems can reach 72 inches. Grown as an annual, it is hardy down to 30 degree F and is a perennial in U.S. Department of Agriculture Plant Hardiness Zones 10 and 11.

    Wave Rose

      Wave Rose is a low-growing petunia cultivar created as a groundcover or trailing petunia. When planted 12- to 24-inches apart, it can spread up to 4-feet wide. A prolific bloomer, it produces masses of deep pink blossoms from spring to late summer. Wave Rose requires full sun for optimal growth and robust blooming. This petunia requires a regular watering and fertilizing schedule. As with other petunias, it attracts hummingbirds and butterflies. Gardeners enjoy Wave Rose in beds, baskets, containers and window boxes.
