In perfect Lapa fashion, a centenary building was completely renovated for the creation of Teatro Odisseia, one of Rio's top nightlife spots since its opening in 2004.
The 1903 building was originally a warehouse for years. Its brick and stone walls were preserved and reinforced with metallic structures when it was renovated to become Teatro Odisseia. A mezzanine, a new roof in French style and a terrace with a view of the Lapa Arches and the Metropolitan Cathedral were added.
The multi-purpose venue hosts shows, art exhibits, book launchings and more, but Rio de Janeiro travelers know it best as a great place to eat, drink and dance to some of the best Brazilian music in town.
Some of the best bands playing often at Teatro Odisseia come from Rio de Janeiro Carnival blocos, such as Empolga às 9 and Mulheres de Chico.
The menu has many bar food faves, such as codfish croquettes (R$21,50), linguiça with onions (R$20,50), fried sardines (R$19,50 for 10) and escondidinho (sun-dried meat and manioc puree casserole, R$19,90).
Drinks include Brazilian and imported beer, whisky, and mixes such as caipisake (R$13,50), a version of caipirinha made with sake instead of cachaça.
