• Get familiar with a business before you apply. Just like every person has his or her own style, a business does too. If you are not already aware of how employees at the company dress, you can find out, according to job search website QuintCareers.com.
  
  Drop by the business to pick up an application and take a look around at what the other employees are wearing. If everyone is wearing khakis and polo shirts or blouses, then you are probably safe wearing the same. If everyone is in a suit and tie, then you know you'll need to match that. If you do not have the opportunity to observe the employees, call the human resources office and ask about the dress code.
  
  

Dress for Success

  Wear a conservative two-piece business suit or clothing consistent with the company standards if you know them. Dark blue or gray suits are the safest bet. A long-sleeve shirt or blouse that is tucked in neatly should be worn under the jacket if applicable. White, light blue or pastel shirts typically go well in this situation.
  
  Wear clean, polished dress shoes and be sure your hair is not in need of a trim. If it is, you should get one. Wear your hair in a conservative style and be sure fingernails are clean and trimmed. If you choose to wear cologne, do not apply it too heavily.
  
  Empty your pockets of anything unnecessary. Do not carry anything that will bulge, rattle or look unappealing. The interview won't take too long, so you won't need to have your cell phone, cigarettes or loose change or gum in your pockets. Do not chew gum during the interview.
  
  Carry a briefcase or portfolio case and take out any visible piercing in your nose, eyebrows, lips or face. Ties should be worn with a neat, properly tied knot. If you do not know how to tie the knot, buy a clip-on or ask someone to help you.
  
  

Check Yourself

• Go to the restroom just before your interview if possible. Look in the mirror and check your appearance. Make sure your tie is straight, your hair is combed and there is nothing stuck to you of which you aren't aware.
