- Pima Medical Institute offers a veterinary assistant training program at 11 locations nationwide. This program prepares students for careers as vet assistants, teaching them postoperative care, lab procedures and medication administration. Students can complete this 30-credit program in nine months. Courses include Comparative Veterinary Anatomy and Physiology, Animal Life Stages, Nutrition and Husbandry, and Pharmacology and Principles of Anesthesia. Students also participate in an externship to receive hands-on experience in veterinary medicine.
- The Penn Foster Career School offers a veterinary assistant program for people with a love of animals. The program covers a range of topics that vet assistants will address in their careers, including how to obtain an animal's medical history, how to provide specialized nursing care and how to care for the animals before and after surgery. This accredited school offers independent study, meaning vet assistant students can prepare for their career at their own pace.
- California State University East Bay's Continuing Education program offers a veterinary assistant certificate, which can help prepare students for a career in veterinary medicine. Students will learn about veterinary medicine terminology, the operation of a veterinary clinic and ways to assist during surgery and other procedures. This program consists of one self-paced course, allowing students to earn their certificate on their own time. Units in the course include The Veterinary Assistant as Communicator, Billing and Coding in the Veterinary Office and Assisting the Veterinarian and Grooming Basics.
- Ashworth College offers a veterinary assistant training program that students can complete in as little as six months. The program consists of 22 lessons that cover a range of topics in veterinary medicine. Lesson topics include Veterinary Anatomy and Physiology, Nursing of Dogs and Cats, Dentistry and Nutrition, and Behavior and Physical Restraint. Students will also learn how to perform lab tests and treat common animal diseases and disorders.
