Usually, Hookah is known as `waterpipe` or `hubble-bubble`;it is used to smoke with tobacco. Traditional hookah comprises head, body, waterbowl, mouthpiece and hose. But shape of hookah is varying from place to place. In markets, hookah is available in different flavors e.g., apple, mint, watermelon, cherry, chocolate, licorice and cappuccino. This flavored hookah-tobacco is also called sheesha. Typically; people like to practice hookah smoking in groups with one mouthpiece passed from person to person.
Hookah is originated from Persia and India. About 500 years ago, hookah smoking became popular among the upper class and intellectuals of Turkey. They introduced new and elegant styles of hookas. Later, hookah smoking migrated from south to Arab world; especially in Syria and Lebanon; got the name of `argile`.
Hookah smoking got the name of Hubble bubble in Saudia Arabia and United Arab Emirates. In Saudia Arabia and Kuwait,shisha bars are strictly forbidden to women; even the women are not allowed to enter in the bars. Shisha smoking is getting popularity in Pakistan too. But now it is gaining popularity around the world. The ratio of popularity is equal in eastern and western countries. In 2006, there were 300 hookah cafes were operated in United States. In recently few years, sheesha smoking is getting popularity in Japan. Hookah tobacco is notably popular in youth.
Women are also used hookahs as their past time.In many Islamic countries; it is a common concept that hookah smoking is haraam (forbidden).But today equally in eastern and western countries; hookkah shisha bars get the status of public points where people get together and discuss political and personal issues.Old generations used opium and hashish for hookah smoking while the new generation is giving preference to Naklia shisha; which is the combination of foreign tobaccos, honey molasses and dried fruit. It is a wrong and common misconception that hookah smoking is less harmful than cigarette smoking! World Health Organization (WHO) claims that smoking shisha or hookah for one hour is equivalent to smoking 100 cigarettes.
WHO claim does not based on any scientific research. Professor Robert West, Director of Tobacco Studies at University College London; researched and finally concluded that hookah smoking can cause DNA damage which ultimately leads to cancer. He claims:€Smoke from tobacco contains a number of carcinogens which damage the DNA in cells;just one damaged cell can divide and multiply uncontrollably into a large tumor. This is what causes lung cancer€. Hookah smoking can also cause oral and esophagus cancer. Sharing of hookah causes infectious diseases, it also affects the body stamina. Women who smoked during pregnancy caused lower birth weights.Smoke from hookah affects nonsmokers too.In 2008, Pakistani researchers found that hookah shisha smoking raises CEA levels.
