Why should I consider choosing Drupal as a cms.
This is a question all of you struggling website developers should ask yourselves when deciding on how you should build your next website.
Most people just getting involved in the website industry have probably never heard of Drupal, in fact you probably don't know the term cms.
So heres a quick breakdown of what a cms is, why you should use one and why you should consider Drupal.
OK lets start with the term cms.
A cms is a content management system.
To make this simple its a way of taking information that you (the developer or content publisher) add to your website and display it in a fashion that you desire.
Maybe you know the term blog.
A blog is basically an example of a working cms.
It takes information you input, (your blog posts) and displays it in an orderly fashion.
It is manages your content.
The basic idea is that you can input information, usually into a database and pull that information immediately or save it for being displayed in some other manner at some other time.
Now you can make a website using static html pages, but having the ability to store information and display it later adds so much to the value of your site.
It opens up so many possibilities for developing and expanding your site.
Using a cms to input data into a database allows you, even with very little html or programming knowledge to make very dynamic and impressive websites.
In fact using a cms to make your pages is almost easier than programming a simple page so why not use one.
Okay, so now that you are ready to use a cms, I hope you are anyways.
How do you choose the right one.
The truth is there are so many great content manage systems that anyone you pick will be a step up from your standard website but there are reasons to look around.
So what should you look for.
Well first and foremost, you probably aren't really familiar with this so to cut your expenses (you don't want to waste your money if you aren't going to like it) it should be free.
Look for open source systems or free licensed ones.
Next you will want it to be well supported.
Not a great deal if you get the thing installed and can't figure it out.
How about security? If you ever expand your site or offer memberships, security is a definite issue.
And last but not least scalability.
Do you want just a blog? Great, now what if you decide you want to add a forum, and search functions.
What about images, friends etc.
? I think you get the point.
Drupal is your answer.
It meets all the criteria for a great content managements system.
It is completely customizable, there are tons of free drupal themes themes are basically drupals templates.
Drupal has a very huge following and its completely open source.
Thousands of members who are ready and willing to help you out.
Drupals main site is loaded with help articles and forums.
Granted it isn't the easiest to learn but it is probably the most flexible.
That being said if you just need a simple site it is as easy as any of the others.
Drupal has been voted the top open source cms system for the last two years running so give it a shot.
I hope this has helped you in your future website endeavors and good luck with drupal.
