How to Install Martin Houses

    • 1). Decide on the best location for a martin house. Martins have specific space requirements called the "glide path" or "swoop path" and require a nest in the center of the most open spot on a property. There should be no trees or buildings within 46 to 60 feet of the pole (a minimum distance of 30 feet).

    • 2). Set poles in concrete 18 to 25 inches below the ground. Many pole manufacturers offer sockets or stakes so martin landlords can relocate or remove the poles.

    • 3). Drill ventilation holes at an angle under the roof overhang. Drill drainage holes in the bottom corners of each compartment. Good ventilation, drainage and insulation are important elements of managing martin houses.

    • 4). Adjust the pole so the house is 10 to 17 feet high. Remember that higher poles are more susceptible to wind damage.

    • 5). Monitor martin houses weekly. Martin landlords might prefer an aluminum martin house for the ease of raising and lowering. Check for parasites on the nestlings and replace any soaked nesting material.
