How to Maintain GE Dishwashers
- 1). Use only the recommended amount of automatic dishwasher detergent. GE recommends the use of the Cascade brand detergent in gel, powder or liquid form. The company also recommends the use of Cascade's rinse aid in the rinse-aid dispenser.
- 2). Run hot water into a glass container at the kitchen sink and use a candy or meat thermometer to check the water temperature on a regular basis. GE dishwashers work best with a water temperature between 120 and 150 degrees Fahrenheit.
- 3). Prepare dishes prior to loading by removing hard, dried debris or seeds, bones, skins or toothpicks from plates, dishes and utensils before washing. In addition, any meat trimmings, grease, oil, leafy vegetables or large amounts of food debris should be removed from dishes prior to washing. This will help keep the filter operating well and will improve cleaning performance.
- 4). Load dishes properly by stacking glasses, saucers, cups and small bowls on the upper rack. Keep a space between each dish and tilt items facing down. Clip delicate items into the side clips to secure them during the wash cycle. Load the lower basket with plates and cookware in the center and large pans, platters and bowls around the outer sides of the rack. Face the soiled surface towards the center of the rack, facing down if possible. Don't overload the dishwasher and make sure the spray arms rotate easily without obstruction.
- 5). Load silverware with handles facing up except for spoons, which should be facing up. Distribute utensils evenly in the silverware basket with smaller plastic items on the bottom and other items on top.
- 6). Clean the door panel with a damp cloth for painted or "CleanSteel" door panels and stainless steel cleaner for stainless steel panels. Check your user manual to determine the type of panel on the dishwasher.
- 7). Clean the air gap, if applicable, by lifting the air gap lid and removing it. Use a toothpick to clean the air gap components and then close the lid.
