How to Harvest Sugar Beets
- 1). Harvest sugar beets following the first frost in autumn. Monitor the weather and climate conditions to determine when the first frost has taken place.
- 2). Put on gloves to protect your hands. Grasp the top of the sugar beet that is growing above ground. Pull the beet straight up and out of the ground. Use a hoe, if necessary, to help remove the beet.
- 3). Hold one beet in each hand, tapping the beets together. Remove as much dirt as possible from the sugar beets.
- 4). Place the sugar beets on the ground. Leave the beets on top of the ground for 24 hours to begin the drying process.
- 5). Gather the beets for storage or processing. Cut the tops from the beets before storing in baskets or processing.
