How to Include a Trustee's Name on a Title Insurance Policy
- 1). Call your title insurance company and ask if the policy will cover the change in title, such as from "John Smith" to "John Smith, Trustee of the Smith Family Trust." If you transfer title without inquiring first, your title insurance policy could be terminated because the policy only covers you, not your living trust.
- 2). Request an additional insured endorsement in your name as trustee from your title insurance company. State laws generally permit title companies to continue the original policy as long as you pay the required premium.
- 3). Pay the required premium for the additional insured endorsement. The premium rate is usually set by law. For example, the Texas Department of Insurance permits an additional insured endorsement with a minimum premium payment of $25.00 or 10% of the policy's basic rate.
