How to Call a Cow Moose

    • 1). Look for fresh tracks in open areas. Cow moose will most often be found around high quality food sources such as clear-cuts with new growth, alpine meadows and swamp edges.

    • 2). Imitate the bleat of a calf moose. Appealing to a cow's maternal instinct will sometimes bring her into range. Cup your hands around your mouth and pinch your nostril tightly closed with your thumbs. Try to breathe out through your nose while making a short, blunt "ahh" sound.

    • 3). Call to the bulls with a cow call; this will often bring in a bull that has a cow with him, or just a curious cow. Cups your hands and pinch your nose as with a calf call, but emit a long, deep guttural moan into your cupped hands. Allow the sound to resonate through your nostril, but without allowing the sound to actually come out through your nose.

    • 4). Rake brush and trees with a stick. This will imitate the sound of a bull thrashing vegetation with his antlers.

    • 5). Show patience when calling. Unlike rutting males that may come crashing in when hearing a cow call, a cow moose will most likely take her time to respond. Wait at least 20 minutes between calling attempts, or before giving up on a location and moving to a new area.

    • 6). Call softly on your first attempt in a new area. If you call too forcefully you can spook any animals that are in close proximity. If soft calling does not elicit a response, increase the volume of the call on subsequent attempts.

    • 7). Keep a keen lookout. Though moose are large and look clumsy, they can slip though the thickest timber as silently as a ghost moving over rock. If you don't keep your eyes moving,a cow may come in, take a look around and then leave without you ever knowing she was there.
