Ferret Diet - A Weight Loss Plan High in Animal Protein and Fats

103 11
Ferrets are fed with a diet high in animal protein and fat.
Since a ferret is unable to digest vegetable protein, it eats only meat and foods that are very low in carbohydrates.
It derives its energy from animal fat, which spurs debate on whether a ferret diet should be whole prey or raw meat.
Many of the high quality ferret kibbles available in the market contain high amounts of grains, corn, and other sources of filler material on top of vegetable protein.
Ferrets that are fed with excessive vegetable protein suffer from varying conditions such as poor skin and coat quality, decreased growth rates, bladder stones, and many more.
High levels of carbohydrates in their diets puts too much stress on their pancreas, resulting to insulinoma.
Although there is no definitive proof that a diet high in carbohydrates can cause insulinoma, it is wise not to make the beta cells in the pancreas to overwork, lest they become overactive (hypertrophied) which can either result to being burnt out (stop functioning altogether) or having neoplasia (cancer).
Feeding your ferret with a raw and natural diet does not turn it into aggressive wild animal.
There are two types of natural diets to choose from, a whole prey diet and a raw carnivore diet.
Bones and meats are the staples of a natural diet in both types.
The whole prey diet is a balanced natural diet with its notion of pre-killed, frozen prey such as mice, rats and chicks.
Ferrets have teeth designed for cutting meat and bone.
Providing them with whole prey makes those teeth most useful.
It also helps in cleaning their teeth and gums and provides the opportunity to experience varied tastes and textures.
A raw carnivore diet is another natural diet option.
This is a good alternative to pet owners who hesitate to feed prey animals.
This natural diet include commercially prepared meals that contain meat, organs, and bones as well as raw or cooked meat such as chicken wings, raw liver or heart, and other equivalent foods.
