How to Register a Business in Victoria, Australia
- 1). Use Business Victoria's Registration and License Finder online tool. You will answer questions about your business such as the type of business, its location, your business structure and how you will operate your business. Answer each question carefully to ensure you receive the correct list of licenses you must apply for.
- 2). Examine the list of licenses provided by the tool once you answer all the questions. Click on each license to find application forms for each license and print them out or apply online. Complete all of the forms and submit them with any required fees as soon as possible.
- 3). Register for an Australian business number (ABN) with the Australian Tax Office (ATO). You can register for an ABN online. Your ABN is your identification number that you will use when corresponding with the ATO.
- 4). Register for the general sales tax (GST) license online if you are required to. Business entities in Australia that have an annual turnover at or above AUD75,000 or AUD100,000 for a non-profit organization are required to register for GST. You also have to register for GST if you provide taxi travel regardless of your turnover amount.
- 5). Research Pay As You Go (PAYG) installments and withholding requirements for your business. The PAYG system allows businesses and employees to pay their tax liabilities in installments throughout the year and you will be required to withhold income taxes from your employees as well. Become familiar with this system and your obligations as they relate to your business by reading about it on the ATO website and the Business Victoria website.
