This is Mindy McIntosh-Shetter, and I'm going to show you how to prune and clip garden mums. Now this task should be done in the Spring as soon as your mum plant has broken ground but just for demonstration purposes I'm going to demonstrate the steps on this particular mum. Now what you're going to need to do is you're going to need to prune away any diseased plant material that you see and you're just going to simply take some hand pruners and you're going to clip it down all the way to the ground if it is diseased like this. Now pinching you can effect the shape of the mum, but you can also cause additional branching which in turn will cause additional blooming and the pinching process is pretty simple, you just pinch it and remove it with your fingers. Periodically check your mum and make sure to remove and just pinch off those little branches that are kind of sticking out out of the way that's effecting the shape of your mum then come Fall you'll have a nice round full mum that will be full of blooms.
