What Time of Year Do You Plant Watermelon?
- Watermelon seeds should be planted when the soil is warm, at least 64 degrees Fahrenheit. They should only be planted after the last frost date. If you have a long growing season, stagger plantings so you can harvest for a longer period when the fruit matures.
- High rainfall, cool weather and a short growing season may adversely affect watermelon quality, resulting in melons that are not very sweet or flavorful. Also, a long period of extremely dry weather during the maturation period for watermelons will lead to unsatisfactory development, including rotting ends on the melons.
- Buy a faster-maturing variety of watermelon seed if you live in a cooler area. Watermelons require full sun, good soil, lots of water and plenty of room. Plant the seeds in mounds to allow for better drainage.
