How to Cut #80 Roller Chain

104 5

    Using a Chain Breaker Vice

    • 1). Position the #80 roller chain in the vice so that it sits on-end by squeezing the hand vice. You will notice two pins connecting each individual chain link together. One of these connecting pins needs to be placed directly below the protruding extracting pin in the vice. The hand grips on the vice can be released and the spring action will grip the chain in this mode,

    • 2). Slowly lower the jacking screw on the vice by turning the handle or the "tommy bar" as it is referred to, in a clockwise rotation. An extracting pin will lower and contact the chain with this action, and the roller chain must be positioned so that the extracting pin lines up perfectly with a connecting pin on the chain.

    • 3). Continue turning the handle and as the extracting pin meets the connecting pin, it will slowly begin to push it out the other side. Some force will be needed to turn the handle at this point, but keep turning until the connecting pin falls out of the bottom.

    • 4). Reposition the roller chain in the vice. Each individual chain link is held on by a pin on each end of it, the pin holding the other end together needs to be extracted. Place the other end and its connecting pin beneath the extracting pin on the vice, and repeat the process of turning the handle and pushing the pin out. When this last pin has been extracted, the link will fall free and you will have effectively "cut" the roller chain.

    Using a Chain Breaker

    • 1). Position the #80 roller chain in the chain breaker so that it sits on-end, with the chain connecting pins visible and accessible. A hand screw on the side can be turned in a clockwise rotation to tighten down the chain.

    • 2). Pick up the extracting pin which will look very much like a center punch. The tip will be relatively long and skinny, and it needs to be placed directly on top of one of the roller chain connecting pins.

    • 3). Grab your hammer and position it on top of the extracting pin. Tap the top of the pin, and with each tap the chain connecting pin will slowly become displaced from inside of the chain. Keep tapping until, the connecting pin falls out of the bottom.

    • 4). Since each individual chain link is held on by a pin on each end of it, the pin holding the other end together needs to be extracted. Place the extracting pin over the top of the connecting pin, and repeat the extraction process by tapping it with a hammer until the connecting pin falls out. When this last pin has been extracted, the link will fall free and you will have effectively "cut" the roller chain.
