Male Hair Loss Prevention - What Are the Most Effective Methods?

103 23
There are many possible methods of male hair loss prevention, including dietary changes and even regular exercise.
All of these methods may be beneficial and since they are good for your overall health, they are highly recommended.
But, when pattern baldness is "in the family", the issue of dihydrotestosterone must be addressed, in order to be successful.
Dihydrotestosterone or DHT for simplicity's sake is a hormone responsible for some of the characteristics of masculinity.
For example, it plays a role in the growth of facial hair, muscle tissue and the deepening of the voice.
It seems to play a role in a man's sex drive, as well.
Unlike testosterone, it cannot be converted into estradiol (estrogen), which some researchers believe is significant for continued masculinity.
Others don't agree, because despite the "good" things that it does, it is best known for the role that it plays in pattern baldness, enlarged prostate and (possibly) prostate cancer.
More than 50% of all men are affected by pattern baldness to some degree by the time they reach the age of 50.
So, it's understandable why male hair loss prevention is a "hot topic" among researchers.
50-75% of all men will have some symptoms of enlarged prostate, if they reach the age of 75.
Enlarged prostate increases their risk of prostate cancer, which is the most common form of cancer among men.
So, it's understandable why the role of DHT in both conditions has been greatly studied.
The drug finasteride (aka Propecia or Proscar) blocks the conversion of free testosterone into DHT.
It was originally developed for the treatment of enlarged prostate.
It has been tested on men between the ages of 18 and 41.
It has been touted as the key to male hair loss prevention, but it is not without side effects.
Some of which are long-lasting.
Instead of taking an oral drug, with all of its side effects, it is possible to block the production of DHT in the hair-producing follicles, alone.
With a topically applied solution called Minoxidil, research has shown benefit in preventing further balding and in re-growing hairs that appeared to be lost.
Finasteride has only proven beneficial in preventing further balding, not in reversing what has already occurred.
So, there are a number of reasons to choose Minoxidil over finasteride, including a lower price tag and no prescription necessary.
But, Minoxidil cannot reduce the risk of enlarged prostate or help prevent prostate cancer.
An herb called saw palmetto is sometimes recommended for male hair loss prevention and it is commonly recommended for the support of prostate health.
Instead of blocking the production of DHT, it blocks the receptor sites that absorb DHT into the cells.
So, there are few, if any, side effects.
Some companies provide the complete plan for male hair loss prevention with a 5% solution of Minoxidil and a dietary formula containing saw palmetto.
It's important to start early and continue treatment, in order to maintain the benefits.
