How to Replace Trailer Lights

    • 1). Park the trailer on a flat location and put chocks behind the wheels. It's easier to work on a stable trailer.

    • 2). Using the adjustable wrench or a socket wrench, remove the nuts from the two bolts that hold each light to the trailer. If these are rusty and difficult to remove, use spray lubricant and let it stand for a few minutes. The nuts should then be easy to remove.

    • 3). Remove the wires that are connected to the lights from the trailer wiring system. This is easily accomplished by untwisting the wires where they are connected. Use your utility knife to strip away two inches of insulation from wires on the trailer wiring system.

    • 4). Remove the two lights from the trailer light kit. Mount one light to either side of the trailer in the same location as the old lights. Each light will have two bolts extending from it. Slide these bolts through the holes that are in the trailer. Screw the nuts that were supplied in the kit onto the bolts to tighten the lights. Use the adjustable wrench to further tighten the nuts until they are very secure.

    • 5). Connect the wires from the lights to the trailer wiring system. Connect each colored wire on a light to the corresponding wire of the same color on the trailer wiring system. Carefully wrap each connection with electrical tape.

    • 6). Connect the trailer wiring connection plug to the receptacle on your vehicle and test the lights. If the lights do not work properly, readjust the electrical connections until you get the desired result.

    • 7). Walk around the trailer to make sure no wires are hanging down. If any wires are hanging loose, use wire clips to attach them firmly to the trailer.
