Roof Layers

• The foundation of most roofs is fashioned with wood, concrete, asphalt or metal. Shingles, made from roofing felt, are applied in an overlapping pattern over the roof base. Once all of this is complete, a layer of rubber is placed on top of the shingles. The rubber adds weatherproofing and durability to the overall construction. Rubber is laid over the roof in large sheets, which are then held in place with mechanical fasteners or stone ballasts.
  
  

Rubber Roofing

• The top layer of roofs is usually made with thermosets, thermoplastics or bitumens. All three materials are pliable and flexible with good resistance to water. Thermosets are made from rubber polymers. Of these, EPDM is the most common. Known as "rubber roofing," EPDM thermoset creates a thin but tough membrane to protect roofs. The rubber-like material stands up to sunlight, common chemicals and moisture. The rubber layer protects shingles from the ravages of weather and time. Replacing this top layer of rubber every 10 to 15 years could extend the life of your roof and prevent weather damage and wear.
  
  

Installation

• Specialized roofing contractors and carpenters are capable of installing new roofs of repairing existing roofs. Always use a trustworthy professional when it comes to roof installation and repair; choose a company or individual that is licensed and insured. Roof work is dangerous business. If done improperly, consequences could be fatal to the roofers or even to people below the roof. An improperly installed roof may also leak, causing significant damage to the building underneath. Don't wait until you have a leak to repair your roof. If your roof is 10 or more years old, consider having a new rubber membrane placed to provide protection and longevity to the roof.
  
  

Cost

• Roofing cost varies for a number of factors, not the least of which is size. Sheer square area, pitch and even height will all have a role in determining the total cost of roof replacement or repair. Most estimates, given on-site, are free. Roof cost will also vary depending upon time of year -- some companies may charge more to work outdoors in the harsh conditions of winter than summer, for example. Receive bids from multiple roofing vendors to find a fair price.
