Do you remember the Great Depression? I don't either.
But I remember people who remember the Great Depression.
During graduate school I was in the house of a fellow student whose father had been around for a while.
The house was large and in the best part of town.
He was very successful.
One evening I saw my friend's father put the smallest amount of food into a container and place it in the refrigerator.
At the time I thought it was very strange.
All this money and he was taking the time to save a few pennies worth of food.
I was a poor graduate student.
What would I have done with the food? Thrown it away, of course.
Why? Because I am a product of my age.
I was raised during a time when the use of credit was becoming a way of life.
I was also programmed (and still am) by a culture that increasingly manufactures disposable items.
If something breaks...
buy a new one.
I did not have the 'advantage' of seeing the devastation caused by the Great Depression.
I did not live through World War II when Americans - and a whole lot of other people - had to tighten their belts and live without certain things.
Like most Americans of my generation I have known relative prosperity and a society of free credit.
People who have lived through difficult times are forever changed by the experiences.
They understand hard work and the uncertainty of investing too heavily in risky financial markets.
