How to Check the Oil in a Hydraulic Jack
- 1). Place the jack on a level surface.
- 2). Twist the jack handle counterclockwise to fully lower the saddle. The saddle is the portion that lifts your vehicle when you operate the jack.
- 3). Remove the filler plug on top of the reservoir with a flat-head screwdriver. The reservoir is the cylinder between the handle and the floor jack.
- 4). Check the level of the oil inside the reservoir. Most floor jack manufacturers recommend that the oil level is 3/16-inch above the inner piston. The piston is visible beneath the hydraulic oil.
- 5). Insert a funnel into the fill hole and add hydraulic oil as necessary. Do not overfill the reservoir.
- 6). Thread the filler plug back into the reservoir and tighten with the screwdriver.
- 1). Lower the jack piston completely.
- 2). Remove the oil filler plug on the front side of the jack with your fingers. If the plug is too tight, use the blade of a flat-head screwdriver to loosen it.
- 3). Check the hydraulic oil level. The oil should be just below the bottom edge of the filler hole.
- 4). Insert a funnel into the filler oil and add hydraulic oil as necessary. Thread the filler plug back onto the front of the jack.
- 5). Pump the jack to its fully extended position and continue pumping six times. Remove the filler plug to allow air to escape and replace the plug.
