Wood pellets, made from sawdust and wood chips, can be burned in a fireplace or wood stove as an alternative to traditional wood. Many users recommend purchasing a pellet box in order to better aerate the pellets and allow for the ash to fall down between the grates. Wood pellets are more expensive than corn and can be difficult to find. A 40-lb. bag can cost $5 to $10. - Corn can be used as a wood substitute. Corn burns hotter than wood and wood pellets, so it is best to start with a small amount, then increase the amounts depending on the design of your stove. One bushel, the average amount burned per day, may cost $1.50 to $4. Purchase dried bulk corn from pet, feed or specialty suppliers.

In some areas, cherry or olive pits are used as a plant substitute for wood. Finding pits in bulk can be quite difficult. Cherry pits burn even hotter than wood pellets or corn and can be mixed with other wood-burning methods.
