How to Trim Weeping Fig Tree Roots

104 3
    • 1). Remove the weeping fig tree from its pot. If the tree is large, tip it on its side and use your feet on the rim of the pot as leverage. Hold the tree by its trunk and not the branches.

    • 2). Dump out the old soil in the pot and fill it one-fourth of the way with new potting soil.

    • 3). Use a sharp knife to slice off the bottom of the weeping fig's root ball. Take off up to one-third of the growth.

    • 4). Slice off the same amount of growth from the sides of the root ball.

    • 5). Loosen the outside of the root ball with your fingers or a hand cultivator. The aim is to rough it up a bit so that the roots have an easier time growing out of the ball and into the new soil.

    • 6). Place the weeping fig's root ball back into the pot and add or remove soil so that it sits 1 inch below the rim. Fill the pot with soil, patting it down periodically to remove any air pockets.

    • 7). Water the soil slowly until it drains from the bottom of the pot then water it again. Add more soil if needed. Keep the soil moist while the weeping fig adapts to the new conditions.

    • 8). Prune the stems to compensate for the loss of roots. You don't need to cut too much -- 2 to 3 inches from each stem is sufficient.
