Cancer of the Glands in Dogs
- The canine adrenal glands regulate hormones in the body. Up to 2 percent of all dog tumors are adrenal gland tumors, making them fairly rare in canines.
- In dogs, cancer of the anal gland or anal sac causes a growth on the rectum. It is fairly uncommon in dogs but can spread quickly. Unfortunately, dogs who do develop anal gland cancer often have a poor prognosis.
- Mammary gland cancers usually occur in unspayed female dogs. Dogs have five mammary glands and most cases of mammary gland cancer arise in the fourth or fifth mammary glands.
- In dogs, pituitary tumors are usually benign and only cause harm because of their location within the body. Up to 20 percent of Cushing's disease in dogs is due to a pituitary gland tumor. In rare cases, the cancer can be malignant and metastasis will occur.
- Canine sweat gland tumors occur when sweat gland cells overgrow. While most sweat gland tumors are benign and can be removed surgically, some tumors can be malignant and spread throughout the body.
