The Installation of Fountains in Ponds

Install a fountain near the edge of your pond, especially if the body of water is large. Fountains need periodic maintenance -- such as cleaning out the filter -- and locating the unit near the edge gives you access to the working apparatus without having to wade into the pond. The spray from the fountain should fall back into the pond so you are re-circulating the water to power your pump. Place your pond's fountain within reach of a GFCI-protected electrical outlet. If you do not have a convenient outlet, hire a licensed electrician to install one nearby. - A small, inverted terracotta pot serves as a durable fountain support.Hemera Technologies/AbleStock.com/Getty Images
Place your fountain's pump at least 2 inches from the pond's bottom to keep the pump from accumulating debris that settles there. Use a brick or a concrete block to set your pump on. Using one or two bricks as a base and loosely wedging the pump between two more bricks ensures that your fountain stays in place, especially if breezes create movement on the pond's surface. If your fountain does not come prepackaged, choose tubing to run the water from pond through pump and up to the fountain head that is one increment above the pump's inlet and outlet ports. For example, if the intake for the pump is 1/4-inch, purchase flexible tubing that is 1/2-inch in diameter. Fountain heads are available with different spray patterns. A fountain can spray in a bubble shape, shoot water in a columnar form or out and away from the fountain. When installing a spitting fountain on a vertical surface at the pond's edge, be sure the pond is in a position to capture all of the water the spout shoots out. Raising and lowering the fountain and basin controls the speed that the water falls and exactly where the water lands. For a subtle, cooling effect, install a fountain without a spray head. The top of the fountain's column should be right at the pond's surface and have enough flow to let the water appear to bubble up on its own.
