About.com Rating

After the commercial and critical success of their last CD, expectations were high for All That Remains and their new release Overcome. On the production side, they brought in producer Jason Suecof (Trivium, Sevendust) after using Adam Dutkiewicz (Killswitch Engage) previously.

Overcome finds All That Remains moving closer to the mainstream. There's a lot more melodic singing, and the songs are more polished than punchy.

They still have a few remnants of metalcore in their sound, but it's mainly straight ahead modern metal with some influences of melodic death and metalcore.

The songs are extremely catchy, and there's still plenty of intensity. The riffs don't really stand out, but the guitar solos are excellent. Phil Labonte does mostly melodic singing on this CD, with some death metal growls and hardcore yells. The album wraps up with a cover of Nevermore's "Believe In Nothing." It's basically a modern rock song, and All That Remains does a by the numbers version that's accessible and very radio-friendly.

Overcome has a few strong songs and memorable melodies, but overall it's a step backwards from The Fall Of Ideals.
