Know Your Mayor

103 3
Have you heard of Foursquare? I'm not talking about the game you used to play in elementary school where you could only hit the ball underhand, and had to worry about tea parties and bus stops; I'm talking about the location based social media site.
If you are on Twitter I'm sure you've seen tweets about people becoming the mayor of certain places on foursquare.
So what does it mean to be the mayor of a certain venue? Foursquare allows users of iPhones, iPod touches, blackberries, android phones and palm devices to 'check-in' whenever they arrive anywhere.
Foursquare is a game in the sense that as you continue to check-in you receive badges as rewards.
Up until recently receiving any given badge really offered nothing at all, except bragging rights.
Now Foursquare has made it easier for businesses to reward users that check-in regularly at their venue.
For example Starbucks teamed up with Foursquare to reward the mayors of all their locations with a $1 discount on a Frappuccino.
Foursquare also made it easy for owners of venues to claim ownership and begin offering specials to users that frequent their place of business.
Is it just me or does anyone else see the amazing potential here? IF THE SHOE FITS.
My advice to anyone that can see their business benefiting by using Foursquare is to GET ON IT AS FAST AS YOU CAN (and call us if you need help).
With 15,000 new users per day you can only assume that your customers already are, or shortly will be using Foursquare, so keep them coming back with check-in promotions, mayor deals, and any other creative plan you can think of to interact with loyal clients using social media.
