Cholinesterase Inhibitors

Definition:
Drugs that increase the level of acetylcholine in the brain.
Examples:
Currently, there are three FDA-approved cholinesterase inhibitors for the treatment of Alzheimer's disease: Aricept, Exelon, and Razadyne. Cognex was the first cholinesterase inhibitor available, but it is no longer used because of its risk for severe liver damage.
