Thank You Letter - To My High School Adviser

102 1
We may not immediately realize it, but the teachers we learned from in our academic years have a lasting impact on our lives. I understood this just recently when a certain tragedy on the news prompted me to remember and appreciate anew the effort and kindness of my high school adviser. This is why Id like to send this thank you letter to her now to let her know that I may not have said it often before, but I am thankful for everything she did for me during my school years.

Dear Miss Eve,

Ive thought about you lately. A few months ago when I watched the news and was bombarded with images of teenagers committing suicide because they lacked guidance and a strong support system, I remembered you. I thought of how unfortunate those kids were that they didnt have someone like you in their lives and how lucky I was that I did. I dont think I really ever got around to saying it, but I hope through this thank you letter youll know how much I appreciated it.

While I never did have suicidal thoughts back in the day, high school is never easy for anyone. But I remember how you made it better, just by asking me and most of my classmates how we were doing. And you did so not in passing, not simply to be polite, nor to pass the awkward silence right before every class but sincerely. I also thought about that time I was going through a phase of uncertainty, unsure where I really fit in and uncaring about where I was headed. You sat me down and with absolutely no judgment in your eyes, told me that life is a series of phases meant to shape our character and mold our future selves. You said that the differences in how we turn out all depend on whether we allow ourselves to get stuck in those stages or learn from them and move on. You were the first one to tell me, This too shall pass and I believed it. If only those kids heard the same phrase from someone like you their tragedy may not have happened. Again, I didnt get the chance to say it but now I will--thank you.

The time at a school dance when you said that high school was supposed to be one of the best times in life also came to mind. In the midst of my parents and other teachers lecturing me to tone the fun factor down, you were there telling me to embrace it wholeheartedly for there would be tough times ahead in life, full of responsibilities and duties. In truth, I think what you said somehow saved me from failure due to irresponsible choices in the future. I maxed out enjoyment so much in high school that I was ready to grow up when I got to university. Once again Teacher, thanks.

Ive really been thinking about you lately. I pondered on how educators should never take their responsibilities to their students lightly and how extending your concern genuinely can already do so much. Just like you did. I hope this thank you letter isnt too late for me to express my thanks teacher.

Youre in my thoughts,

A.J. Cameron
