Wall Decor

• The right wall decorations can do a lot to develop a theme. Turn the VBS room into a stadium or sports arena. Cover the walls with white paper and paint a crowd on it. Paint the "fans" in rows as would be seen in a real stadium. Paint the fans in the front row with facial details as well as defined clothing details. Reduce details as you go up the rows and the fans get further away, just like in a real stadium. For less time-intensive wall decoration, consider hanging posters of famous sports figures on the walls. Add team pennants and sport ball cutouts such as basketballs or soccer balls.
  
  

Props

• Gather balls and other equipment from different sports to use as decorations. Place balls on tables in the corners of the room or into big baskets waiting to be used during gymnasium play. Create a picture of a football star and a cheerleader on a piece of large cardboard. Cut circles where the faces should be and create a stand so VBS guests can put their faces through the hole to have their picture taken. Hang inflatable balls from the ceiling, and prop tennis rackets in the corner.
  
  

Table Decor

• VBS events often have snack foods for the guests. If your event includes food, keep the sports theme going with snacks. Use a football helmet as a centerpiece for a food table. Surround the helmet with pom poms for a more decorative look. Serve food in football-shaped platters and with napkins emblazoned with baseballs. Put a package of sports cards at each table setting to act not only as a table decoration but as a favor for the children.
  
  

Other Ideas

• Use sports-themed activities to add decorative elements. Create a small putting green by laying a piece of green carpet on the floor and taping a paper cup to it to serve as the "hole." Provide toy golf clubs and balls for children to play with during down times at VBS. Use sports-themed party materials such as crepe paper streamers and balloons to help decorate the room. Include local team merchandise such as jerseys and posters from professional sports or high school teams.
