How to Make a Colorful Tassel Accessory

Tassels

Tassels of all shapes sizes and materials are showing up in the jewelry, fashion and home decor worlds. I wrote about them here: Tassels in Jewelry Making a few weeks ago.

Tassels make great additions to hand bags, lamps, gift tags and much more. And, of course, they make great pendants and earrings too!

The nice thing about projects like this is that you can use some of your left over beads and jewelry making supplies to create this fun and funky accessory.

It is kind of an "anything goes" project that will allow you to use up lots of left over bits and bobs lying around taking up valuable space in your creative space.

Supply List

Supplies:

Begin with the Lobster Clasp

Begin by passing one end of the wire through the loop in the lobster clasp leaving a tail of about 1 inch.

Bend the wire over the loop in the lobster clasp.

Wrap the 1 inch tail around the longer length of wire to form a wire wrapped loop. You probably will not use the whole one inch of wire, just wrap it a few times until it is secure.

Adding the Fibers

Find the center of the fibers by loosely folding in half. Don't worry about all of the ends being exactly even. It actually looks a little better to have a bit of unevenness at the bottom of the fibers.

Pass the wire through the folded portion and back up to the top, next to the wire wrapped loop you just created, to secure all of the fibers together.

Wrap the wire around the first wire wrapped loop a few times to secure.

You will be creating a wire wrapped loop over or next to the one that you first made.

Bring the wire back down to the inside of the fold.

At this point you can cut the wire off or use it to continue to the next step.

Gather all of the fibers together and wrap the wire around them as shown to form the top of the tassel.

Wrap around the tassel half a dozen times or until you get the desired look.

Leave a 2-4 inch tail.

Create a loop with the wire as shown and find the center of the chain and pass the wire through one of the links.

Finish off  the tassel by wrapping the wire around the top a couple of more times and then tucking the ends into the wire. Be sure to fold it down in a way that it won't catch on anything.

Using headpins attach the crystals to the chain with wire wrapped loops.

Punch a hole in the stamped metal blank and attach it to the bottom of the chain with a 7mm jump ring.

One of the best parts of this project is that you can mix and match metal finishes and have a great look. It's a fun way to use up fibers and jewelry findings left over from other projects.

Use the lobster clasp to attach the tassel to a clutch, a chain for a necklace, or any other place you want a pop of color.
