Like any other complicated and large subject infertility is full of statistics and numbers.
But how are they relevant to you? What good do they do? We will try and present some numbers that will help you understand your situation and become better informed so you can make appropriate choices.
In no particular order here goes: ·10% of the reproductive age (15-44) population experiences some fertility problems.
·85% of infertility cases can be successfully treated.
· 12% of women of child bearing age will seek and receive infertility treatment ·66% of infertility cases are due to sperm and ovulation deficiencies ·25% of trying couples conceive in one month; 60% in two months; 75% in 9 months; and 90% in 18 months ·70% of infertility cases consist of primary infertility (male has never impregnated and woman has never conceived) ·30% of infertility cases consist of secondary infertility (woman has previously conceived, male has previously impregnated) ·Women 40 and older have a 50% decrease in their fertility ·30-40% of infertility cases are due to male factor ·20 million sperm per milliliter of semen is the minimum for normal sperm count ·2 milliliters of semen or 40 million sperm must be present per ejaculation ·25% of sperm must be swimming rapidly ·50% of sperm must be swimming ·25% of cases of infertility are due to pelvic inflammatory disease in women ·85-90% of infertility cases can be treated with regular medical treatments such as medication and surgery ·6 million couples per year have fertility challenges ·In vitro fertilization is 50% successful in women under 35 ·In vitro fertilization for women over 35 averages 17%; decreasing with age ·20-25% are infertile due to problems producing and releasing eggs.
These are called ovarian disorders ·20-25% suffer from a pelvic factor such as uterine problems, endometriosis, fibroid tumors, blocked tubes, pelvic adhesions, or PID (Pelvic Inflammatory Disease).
·About 10-15% of infertility cases go unexplained.
