Ayurveda, a medical system that originated in India thousands of years ago, is broadly regarded as the oldest form of healthcare in the world. According to Ayurveda, there are three basic energy types or doshas, present in every person- Vata, pitta, and Kapha. Many external factors like stress, unhealthy diet, weather etc. can disturb the balance between these doshas, and this shows up in the form of a health problem. Ayurveda basically brings the doshas back into balance.

Hair loss is a universal problem, today, and many people are turning to this age-old form of alternative healing to resolve the issue. There are a number of factors leading to hair loss viz. An acute illness, stress, hormonal changes, certain drugs, high fever etc. One important reason for hair loss, according to Ayurveda is excess of pitta Dosha in the body, which is generally triggered by increased temperatures, excessive intake of spicy, salty and sour food, excessive intake of tea and coffee etc. Eating too much fried, oily, greasy, and acidic foods also aggravates Pitta. Pitta balancing herbs and vegetables, which improves the quality of asthi dhathu are effective in treating hair fall.

Usually, Ayurvedic treatment for hair loss includes following a particular diet, meditation, yoga, and yes, we cannot forget medicated herbal oil massage. Regular physical exercise is very beneficial as it helps in balancing the aggravated doshas. - Rub your scalp after washing the hair. It increases the blood circulation and activates the sebaceous glands.

What to eat:

Regular intake of fresh juices made of aloe vera, carrot, lettuce or spinach are a good tonic for hair growth and hair fall control. Consuming yoghurt or curds is a good way to keep hair fall at bay. Vitamin C, vitamin B-complex, zinc and sulphur make the roots of your hair strong. Make sure you eat food consisting of these nutrients, they are sprouts, buttermilk, nuts, milk, soy beans etc. Equally important are the green leafy vegetables, which are rich in fiber. Taking a spoonful of white sesame seeds in the morning suffices for the magnesium and calcium needs of your body, which in turn effectively check hair loss. To flush out the toxins accumulated in your body, you need to drink lots of water.

What not to eat:

Reduce intake of pitta increasing foods and drinks like tea, coffee, alcohol, meat, fried, spicy, sour, and acidic foods. Quit smoking.

Ayurvedic herbs to curb hair loss:

Amla: Amla, which is packed with vitamin C can be eaten raw. Externally, it can be used to make a hair pack, which is prepared by mixing Amla powder with powders of henna and brahmi and curds.

Neem: Powdered neem can be mixed with coconut oil or curds to massage the scalp. This helps to cure dandruff and lice. It also has blood purifying abilities.

Bhringaraaj: it promotes hair growth, also reversing balding and premature graying. It can be taken internally and used externally in the form of oil.

Brahmi: Readily available in the market, this hair pack is used with curd to make an excellent hair pack.

Ritha: This is a natural shampoo. Use the powdered form to massage the scalp and wash it thoroughly; this way you wash your hair without stripping off the natural oils.

Ashwagandha: A weak immune system can also lead to hair loss. Ashwagandha helps to increase immunity, making you feel energized, healthier, stress-free. It also, indirectly, helps to regrow lost hair.
