How to Defend Yourself Against a Bigger Person

    • 1). Avoid your opponent's attacks, if at all possible. Step out of the way of punches or kicks that you see coming. This can give you time to collect your thoughts while keeping you out of harm's way. It also leaves your attacker off balance and creates openings for a counter attack or a chance to escape.

    • 2). React quickly. Don't wait for a larger attacker to get a good grip on you or land a strike. Attackers can be successful if their victims freeze. As soon as you sense the attack or feel your attacker's hands on you, launch a counter attack. Don't think about it. Just strike at whatever you can reach.

    • 3). Target weak points on your attacker's body. Regardless of size, the human body has vulnerable spots that will be much easier for you to damage than a ribcage protected by muscle or a head that you can't reach. Aim a kick to the front or side of the knees. These joints only bend one way and enough pressure will make them snap. Strike the throat or temples (if you can reach the head), gouge the eyes, pull on the ears or punch the solar plexus. Don't waste time trying to hit targets, such as the chest or shoulders, that aren't going to damage your attacker.

    • 4). Use your attacker's momentum against him. You are smaller, so don't try to match force with force. For example, step out of the way of a punch and raise your arms to guard against the strike. Grab your attacker's arm and pull it in the direction it is already going. Pivot on one foot to spin your attacker around and lower him toward the floor. Using your attacker's own force against him will put him off balance and will give you the advantage or a chance to escape.

    • 5). Grab your attacker's hands if he grabs you from behind. Swing your right foot around your attacker's left leg as far as you can so that your hip is pressing into his. Stand up quickly and throw your elbows back. Regardless of how tall you are, this will take your attacker off of his feet.

    • 6). Run away as soon as you have the opportunity. There is no shame in getting out of a dangerous situation. Counter-attack if necessary, but don't linger in a fight with a bigger opponent. Disable your attacker as quickly as possible, get away and then call the police.
