How to Remove Rusted Wheel Bearings

104 4
    • 1). Place the bike in a work stand and turn the pedals. Shift the gears until the chain is on the largest gear on the cassette cluster -- the toothed wheels in the center of the rear wheel. Wrap a chain whip around the gear cluster and place an adjustable wrench over the hub screw on the opposite side of the wheel. Turn the chain whip to loosen the cassette.

    • 2). Unscrew the cassette and remove it to expose the hub. Place a hub tool over the hub and insert a ratchet into the hub tool. Keep the adjustable wrench on the hub on the opposite side of the wheel.

    • 3). Use opposing force to turn the hubs loose. Unscrew them by hand once they are loose. Spray solvent onto the bearing cartridge -- the metal cylinder on the exposed inside of the hub. Let the solvent soak in then wipe away any excess from the wheel.

    • 4). Unscrew the cartridge bearings with a crescent wrench. Once loosened, remove the rusted wheel bearings from the hub.
