I don't have the money to get old and die

I'm inspired to write this article because of my current life's situation. I left a job I had for 20 years. The reasons could be another story. That job provided me with a mediocre insurance policy for my family but it was cheaper because I worked for a larger company. I was not living on the mainland.

I've returned to live in the great USA but have no job or insurance. My wife and I survive OK on a very small investment income.

I start looking into getting health insurance and learned a basic fact. Unless we are stricken with some horrifying illness or are wiped out in a terrible accident, we will end up paying for the doctor and medicine for any average year. We can give the insurance company several thousand dollars a year and they will cover us for thousands of dollars less. Of course on top of that we are paying more money to the doctor and pharmacy. Obviously the money being paid out by the health insurance company throughout the year is our money. After all, they have to profit.

Health insurance now for us folks who earn middle to lower class money, is nothing more than high risk coverage to protect our assets. It's real estate insurance. If I or my wife are suddenly diagnosed with cancer right now, we would have to sell all our real estate to pay to recover. If that's possible. If it's not we'll pay all our money to the doctors, then die.

If I do buy insurance and then one of us are stricken it would cost us more than $10,000 per year but the really big bucks would be covered by insurance. As I wrote earlier, I don't have a job and at 60 years old, it's not real easy to find one. The only reason I would find one, is to pay for insurance and health care as my body slowly falls apart.

Paying cash for our health care is expensive for us and we are relatively healthy people. God forbid we might need an MRI or something. These tests costs thousands. Like others, we hold back on finding out, through tests, how our bodies are doing because we can't pay for it.

I believe there is really only one answer, stay healthy. Don't fall apart. We do everything we can do to prevent that. Eat very healthy foods, and exercise daily. In truth, it's all any of us can do. Eat right and stay fit. The partying and abuses have ended for both of us a very long time ago. The problem is, things keep happening health wise. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out that it's going to keep happening. Age will take over and we will fall apart and we will die.

I just haven't figured out how to afford all that. If I'm lucky, I'll still get to live 20 plus years. In each of those years the cost for care goes up. The problems we're having today affording to see the doctor and buy medicine is only becoming a bigger and bigger problem day by day.

Right now the truth is, I really don't have the money to get old and die.
