How to Extend the Court Date on a Traffic Ticket

104 7
    • 1). Act quickly. All jurisdictions have time restrictions on extension requests. You may need to file days or weeks ahead of time.

    • 2). Read anything you've received from your citing jurisdiction. This includes a copy of the original ticket and the notification of your traffic hearing. If you cannot find extension request instructions then note any websites listed, telephone numbers and the location of the court.

    • 3). Visit the website. Find the traffic court section and read about the traffic court process. Most jurisdictions will list how to extend the date of your traffic hearing online.

    • 4). Extend your hearing date online if applicable. The city of Los Angeles, for instance, allows you to apply for an extension through their automated system using your citation number. You save time and money when you extend online, if this option is available.

    • 5). Extend your hearing date through the mail. Call the citing jurisdiction on the phone number on your ticket or other information. Ask about the extension letter's format, then follow the format and mail it certified.

    • 6). Extend your hearing date in person. Bring your traffic ticket, hearing notification and driver's license to the appropriate authority. Ask to speak to a representative about your hearing, present your identifying documents, and request an extension.
