Koi Pond Kits and The Optional Waterfall Preference

103 11
If you're ready to jump into the wonderful world of owning and enjoying koi fish, there's perhaps no faster way than through koi pond kits.
In my experience, most people would enjoy the beauty and serenity of having these majestic fish parade around their back yard in a well land-scaped habitat.
Typically, the biggest thing that keeps them from enjoying this is just information.
Once people are educated enough to believe they can handle a pond, they are ready to have it constructed yesterday! Fears of whether or not they could care for the fish are now transformed into eager anticipation at the thought of hearing the cascading waterfall and the occasional splash as a fish breaches the water's surface in pursuit of the insect that got too close.
Koi pond kits are the fastest way to get you from here to there.
Koi ponds kits are intended to provide owners a shot at comprehensive installation, from start to finish, and accordingly come with all the supplies and materials you'll need from start to finish.
Specifically, for starters, koi pond kits will have the pond liner.
Depending on your vendor, you'll likely find that you can choose from several options here.
On the one hand, perhaps you've seen the pre-fab, hard shell liners.
These are made for simply placing in the ground as is, and your pond will be the size, shape, and depth of the liner.
Alternately, some koi pond kits may come with plastic liners that allow you to be your own architect.
In this case, you will have some latitude as to the shape and depth of your pond.
The liner will be able to accommodate a pond of a certain size, and it's up to you to decide what exactly suits your fancy.
Once the pond itself is established, the next goal is handling the water.
At the most basic level, your koi pond kits will have a water pump.
This moves the water through a form of filtration system, which should also be included in the koi pond kits.
There will need to be accessories for this, such as a form of water treatment, which may include de-chlorination.
You should also find hose and lines, and so on.
Those are the basic supplies, but note that you can elect to get waterfall units, which would require additional parts.
This is really just a personal decision, but I can attest that there's really nothing like the sound of falling water.
Note that your koi pond kits are designed to help you shortcut the installation by giving you basically everything you need in one box.
However, of course, maintenance knows no shortcuts.
However, there are some basic tips and guidelines I can share that will help you stay on top of things and not feel overwhelmed.
Particularly when you first get your koi, you want to watch them closely to be sure they are acclimating fine.
You'll want to make sure you're learning how to give them the right amount of food.
It's important not to overfeed, or else you'll end up with deteriorating food that pollutes the water and increases ammonia levels, which can ultimately kill fish.
You may find that koi pond kits even come with starter food and maybe even a feeding suggestion.
The rule of thumb I like to use is that I don't even want to feel more than what they can eat in about five minutes.
If they cant' eat it in five minutes, then they may not eat it all.
The food that gets away can promote algae growth too.
One tip you can use when learning the right amount to feed is to keep a skimmer handy.
If you over-feed, simply use the net to get out the extra feed.
Most koi pond kits will come with a skimmer, which you'll use for leaves and other debris too.
