- 1). Secure your motorcycle for maintenance work. If you use your bike's kickstand, verify that the bike is securely balanced in order to avoid damage.
- 2). Locate your motorcycle's choke knob. The choke prominently features a cable that attaches the choke to the carburetor. For some models you may need to remove a housing in order to reveal the choke knob connector.
- 3). Remove the existing choke cable by removing the nuts at each end of the choke cable. You'll need to use a wrench that corresponds to the size of the nuts that your bike uses. Remove any model-specific hardware that is used to secure the choke cable in place, such as a housing or a spring. Be sure to keep the nuts handy once you've removed them and disposed of the old choke cable.
- 4). Reattach any model-specific hardware and screw your new choke cable into place by reattaching the nut on the carburetor side, followed by the nut on the choke side. Be sure not to tighten the cable without overtightening; if overtightened, the cable will have no slack whatsoever and the choke knob won't budge or seal properly.
- 5). Monitor your fuel mileage after you've attached the new choke cable. If you experience poor fuel mileage then it is likely that the cable is not sufficiently sealed; tighten the nuts that hold the cable in place to fix this problem.
